How to Join 488 If You Are or Were Ever a Member of Any IATSE Local
Updated On: May 13, 2024

IF YOU ARE A CURRENT MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING OF ANOTHER IATSE STUDIO MECHANICS OR CRAFT LOCAL, YOU MAY JOIN LOCAL 488 IN ONE OF TWO WAYS:

1. Transfer from Another IATSE Studio Mechanics or Craft Local

The easiest way for someone who is a member of another IA Local to join 488 would be a straight ’transfer’ from your Local. Here is the procedure you will need to follow to complete  the transfer process:

  1. You must notify your local that you would like a transfer.  The Secretary of your current Local will then send Local 488 a transfer card.
    1. Please note that according to the Constitution of the International:

“No member of this Alliance shall be permitted to work outside of the jurisdiction of the local union of which he is a member, for a period of at least two years after his admittance to membership.

  1. We will also need a letter of good standing from your local.
    1.  If you are not in good standing, International will reject the transfer.
    2. The letter should state your member initiation date as well as your status on payment of dues (i.e. Are you current in your dues through the current quarter).
  2. We will also need your new mailing address in either Washington, Oregon, Idaho, or Montana.
  3. We require a verifiable resume.
  4. Finally, we need proof of 30 days worked in your Craft during the preceding 12 months**. Proof can be a combination of pay stubs, invoices, and/or call sheets which list your name. These do NOT have to be days worked on a Union project.
    1. Also, please note on each document how many days of work it represents (i.e. pay stub is for one week, but they often only list hours worked. You need to tell us how many days worked these hours represent).

**Please fill out the form at this link when you are ready to join.**

Our transfer cost is $378 ($300 to IATSE 488; & $78 for Quarterly Dues for Local 488).

2. Dual Card with Another IATSE Local

If you would like to maintain membership in your current Local and obtain a membership card Local 488,  you must:

  1. Prove 18 months residency in our geographical jurisdiction, which includes Washington, Oregon, Northern Idaho, and Montana.
  2. In addition you must have submit proof of membership in your current Local by submitting a current dues statement.

      • To calculate the amount: International Dues for 2020 were $57/Quarter, Dues for 2021-2023 were $58/Quarter
  • You would also pay Local 488 $778 for a New Member Application
    • $600 is to Local 488 for Initiation Fee

  • Contact your previous IA Local and ask for a reinstatement
    • You will pay their fees and meet their requirements for reinstatement
  • The Secretary of your current Local will then send Local 488 a transfer card.
  • We will also need a letter of good standing from your current Local when they send the transfer card. If you are not in good standing, International will reject the transfer.
    • The letter should state your member initiation date as well as your status on payment of dues (making sure you are current).
  • We will also need your new mailing address in either Washington, Oregon, Idaho or Montana.
  • We also require a verifiable resume along with proof of 30 days worked in your Craft during the preceding 12 months**.
    • Proof can be a combination of pay stubs, invoices, and call sheets which list your name and Craft you worked in.
